The City Archives of Stockholm - a
bridge between generations
The City Archives are Stockholm´s memory. The archives contain a considerable
amount of information about many centuries of Stockholm´s history.
This is also where you can find the archives of the local authorities and
parishes, including birth, baptismal, death and marriage registers, inventories,
court protocols and police reports, scrolls from shipping offices, medical
case records, lists of school classes, school reports and vast quantities
of beautiful drawings and maps and much more. The City Archives of Stockholm
also serve as the Stockholm County Records Office and therefore records
of the activities of the County´s parishes, courts, police and customs
authorities are kept here.
Altogether, the archives fill more than 65 kilometers of shelving. Every
document has its own story to tell. Stories about how Stockholm came to
be Stockholm, and stories about the people who lived and worked in the
capital over the centuries. The City Archives of Stockholm are a gold
mine for genealogical research into kinship and regional history.
You are welcome to visit the City Archives of Stockholm to study the documents
that we keep in our depositories at Kungsklippan and Frihamnen. Our office
will provide you with assistance and guidance on how to use the catalogues
and registers to find what you are looking for. Our personnel are always
ready to help you. If you are unable to visit the City Archives in person,
do not hesitate to contact us. For a fee we will then to a limited extent,
try to help you with your research.
