Welcome to “Migranternas Hus”, the House of Migrants

What we do

The House of Migrants is a centre for emigration and genealogy research in the province of Gävleborg. If you want to look for emigrants or relatives from the provinces of Gävleborg, we can help you. You can either let us do the job or come here and do the research yourself with the help of our material. You can book a place for research Monday thru Friday between 10 am and 3 pm. Appointments may be made at other times, if necessary.
Our work also consists of collecting local historical resource material. In this way, the history of our area comes alive.

Museum

At the House of Migrants in Alfta, a museum is constructed to showcase the emigration from this area and the religious cult “Erik-Jansarna.” We welcome visitors both in groups and individually and can offer guided tours. The doll represents Brita Olsdotter, born in 1827 at the Nirs farm in Älvkarhed. She leads us through the exhibition, which exemplifies her life. We follow her from the farm in Hälsingland, via Erik Jansson’s revival meetings, to the dramatic Atlantic crossing and her new life at Bishop Hill in America.
Hours: Mon – Fri 10am – 3pm or by arrangement.

The old farm of Ol-Anders

The House of Migrants is a part of the old farm of Ol-Anders. It is a typical “Hälsingegård”, over two hundred years old and very distinctive in character. In one of the buildings you can enjoy the beautiful murals adorning from 1848. For more information about Ol-Anders and other “Hälsingegårdar”, visit their homepage: www.halsingegardar.com.

Cafeteria

The cafeteria is open during the summer months. Enjoy refreshments while playing miniature golf outside. Hours are Monday to Friday 10:00 am - 8:00 pm., Saturdays 10:00 am.- 4:00 pm. and Sundays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

The House of Migrants is situated on Alfta’s eastern city limits. The building is easy to see from route 50. The address is: Runemovägen 8, Alfta. Tel: +46-271-10861.

  • A library of emigration literature, donated by The Swedish Emigrant Institute in Växjö
  • Our databases EMIBAS and IMIBAS for the province of Gävleborg 1840 – 1925
  • The database “EMIBAS 2002” with more than 1 million emigrants from most parts of Sweden 1840 – 1925
  • The database “Bishop Hill Settlers” (Erik-Jansarna)
  • Database of obituaries from the Swedish-American newspapers Agustana, Sändebudet and Tribunen
